Achantus Leaves Cushion - Red/Dark Grey

Needlepoint kit

From: Beth Russell of Designers Forum

The Acanthus plant is found in the decoration of many ancient cultures; William Morris used it extensively. The original silk wall-hanging which inspired these kits (now at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London) was designed by Morris in about 1875.
The complexity of this dense, layered, subtly shaded wallpaper required 30 printing blocks and 15 colours, causing each roll to cost 16 shillings (80p sterling) - rather expensive in 1875 ! The original watercolour design is in the Victoria & Albert museum, London.
CANVAS: 12#/in Zweigart White De Luxe, 22x26"
DESIGN: 16½x19½" (42x49cm). STITCH: Tent stitch worked with one thread. WOOLS: Appleton tapestry, 22 Colours.
