William Morris was a great designer and prolific writer. He was offered the title of Poet Laureate but refused it, leaving the post open to Tennyson. Morris wrote Love is Enough in 1872, drawing his inspiration from The Mabinogion, the ancient Welsh saga.
Originally intended as a picture book with Morris borders and wood-cuts by Burne-Jones, it tells of a king who gives up his kingdom for the love of a commoner and was described at the time as a "fantastic little book, chiefly lyrical". Beth Russell's attractive needlework sampler is adapted from the front cover. The canvas is printed with the interwoven stems and a chart is supplied for the lettering.
