William Morris Rug

Needlepoint kit

From: Beth Russell of Designers Forum

The design for this unusual sofa seat is attributed to William Morris and his apprentice and successor Henry Dearle. A watercolour of the design (1880-1890) is at the William Morris Gallery. A panel was woven in about 1910 by Morris & Co after the death of Morris and while Dearle was running the company.
The design, doubled and mirror-imaged, is now available as a one piece rug. Again there is sufficient space around the printed canvas to stitch a 3" (7.5cm) border. This is not printed on the canvas, but may be purchased as a separate needlepoint kit consisting of coloured charts and wools.
The Kit contains:
CANVAS: 12#/in Zweigart White de luxe canvas, 20 x 20" (50x50cm)
DESIGN: 16x16" (41x41cm).
WOOLS: Appleton tapestry and crewel. 27 colours.
STITCH: Tent stitch with 1 thread (background 4 threads of crewel wool).
