The wire has an indication of about 55 m on the band. Having to cut 14 pieces of 3.5 m each (= 49 m), there should be about 6 m left over. Instead, only about 1.5 m remains, plus another meter, due to an interruption in the skein. From the DMC I do not expect an approximation of 10% (less, of course!)
