Crewel Wool - Skein : Appleton Crewel Wool in labelled skeins of about 25 m (27 yd): 2 ply, the finer of Appleton's wools, pure British wool dyed and spun in the UK. Appleton, making yarn since 1835, offers over 400 colours, grouped in named ranges (for example Autumn Yellow, from 471 to 479) that run from light to dark; here you will find them all, each with a photo of its own skein, and you can filter them with the colour selector. It is the wool for Jacobean-style crewel embroidery and fine detail: several strands in the needle give fuller coverage, also on fine canvas, and two shades together create subtle blends. The same colours are available in the thicker Tapestry Wool. Screens never show colours exactly: for an accurate match use a shade card. The wool should not be washed (sponge with cold water if needed) and should be kept out of direct sunlight; the fluorescent Hot Neon and Cool Neon shades are less lightfast.
