A counted cross stitch portrait of the Virgin Mary, eyes raised and hands joined in prayer, worked in just a few sepia shades so that the finished piece looks like an old photograph. The short colour list and the large-square chart make it an approachable project even if you have little experience with figurative designs.
Stitches are counted on the fabric and usually worked with two strands of stranded cotton; a hoop or frame helps, and good light makes the pale shades easier to tell apart. The frame is not included: once finished, the piece can be mounted behind glass, perhaps with a light mount, and makes a thoughtful gift for a christening, a communion or a family anniversary.
