Modena is an evenweave in a cotton and modal blend: the modal, made from beech wood cellulose, gives it a smooth hand and a soft sheen, while the regular weave makes the threads easy to count accurately. It is a fine fabric, suited to small-scale work such as samplers, framed pieces, biscornus and borders on small mats and towels.
Cross stitch is usually worked over two threads with one strand of stranded cotton; two strands give fuller coverage, while half cross stitch or stitching over one thread calls for a single strand of a fine thread. Use a size 26 tapestry needle. A frame helps keep an even tension, and the fabric also takes drawn thread work and pulled thread stitches well.
