A 100% linen, woven from the finest quality flax. It is an excellent fabric for cross stitching, hem stitching, drawn work & all types of counted thread work.
Cut of 50 × 70 cm; multiples of the basic cut can be chosen from the drop-down menu below the price.
Original Zweigart color: Raw Linen
Similar to DMC 3782 and Ecru.
Please note: natural fabrics such as linen and cotton are dyed in batches and come in different counts (with more or fewer threads per 1 cm in the case of linen and evenweaves, and more or fewer squares per 10 cm in the case of Aida). Different production batches and different counts may show color variations, even when the fabric is under the same color name. In the textile industry, this is considered completely normal, especially for so-called “vintage” or antiqued fabrics. Therefore, if your project requires a specific shade, we invite you to contact us before placing your order, also because the online image is purely indicative and may appear very different from reality, depending on the display which it is viewed on.

Before stitchingIt is best to wash linen before starting, as every linen shrinks by about 3% in the first wash; if the piece is only going to be framed it can be stitched as it is. Apart from white and natural shades (raw), never go above 35 °C.
Washing after stitchingBy hand, never above 30 °C, with a soap for delicate items (or Marseille soap); do not rub, so the threads do not bleed. Rinse in plenty of cold water.
Drying and pressingRemove excess water by rolling the linen in a clean towel and pressing, without wringing; dry flat, in the shade, away from heat sources. Press while still slightly damp, iron on the linen/cotton setting, always from the back, with a soft folded towel under the embroidery so the stitches are not flattened.

Description

Belfast is a fine, lightweight evenweave linen with the slightly irregular texture of the flax fibre. It suits stitchers who already have some experience of counted thread work and want detailed designs: samplers, small framed pieces, cushions, pincushions, biscornu and sewing accessories. Worked in cross stitch over two threads it gives the same stitch size as 16 count Aida, and it also takes hardanger, drawn thread work and hemstitched borders.

Two strands of stranded cotton are enough for cross stitch over two threads, one strand for a lighter result or for half cross stitch, with a size 26 tapestry needle. Wash the linen before stitching and leave a generous margin around the design for framing and finishing.
