Newcastle is a fine evenweave linen with the slightly irregular surface typical of flax: the fabric keeps its character, yet the threads are easy to count. It suits stitchers who already have some counted thread experience and want small-scale work — samplers, framed pieces, biscornu, pincushions, borders for table linen and towels — as well as drawn thread techniques, since the threads withdraw cleanly.
Cross stitch is usually worked over two threads with one strand of stranded cotton, or over one thread for the finest details; solid stitches and Hardanger call for heavier threads. Use a size 26 or 28 tapestry needle. Wash the linen before stitching, as it shrinks the first time, and leave a generous margin around the design for the frame and finishing.
