Aida is a cotton fabric woven in blocks: the holes are clearly visible and each cross stitch is worked over one block, with no threads to count. This count is a step finer than 14 count Aida and just as easy to read, which helps with charts that carry a lot of detail. It works for pictures, samplers, ornaments, cards, cushions and towel bands.
Use two strands of stranded cotton for the crosses and one strand for back stitch and outlines, or a no. 8 perle cotton. A size 24 or 26 tapestry needle slips through the holes without piercing the weave. On dark colours, a light surface under the frame or a good lamp makes counting easier. Cut with a few centimetres to spare all round for finishing.
