Bergen is a Zweigart linen with the slightly irregular surface typical of flax. The weave is not square: there are more warp threads than weft threads per centimetre, which is why the mill suggests it mainly for free embroidery – whitework, monograms, shadow work, stem stitch and satin stitch on tablecloths, runners, sheet borders, bags and small framed pieces.
It can also be used for counted work, bearing in mind that the stitches come out slightly taller than they are wide. Over two threads, one or two strands of stranded cotton and a size 26 tapestry needle are enough; free embroidery calls for a fine sharp needle instead. Wash the fabric before starting, as linen shrinks in the first wash, and allow a generous margin for hems and finishing.
