Edinburgh is an evenweave linen with a fine, even thread: the threads are easy to count and withdraw cleanly, so it works for cross stitch over two threads as well as for hemstitching and small drawn thread borders. It suits stitchers who already have some experience with counted work and want fine results: samplers, small framed pieces, biscornus, cushions, borders for tablecloths and towels.
Worked over two threads it gives about 18 stitches per inch, so one strand of stranded cotton is usually enough, two for heavier coverage, with a size 26 tapestry needle. Wash the fabric before starting and leave a generous margin around the design for framing and finishing.
