Before stitching	It is best to wash the linen before stitching: all linens shrink by about 3% on the first wash. If the work will only be framed, washing can be skipped. Apart from white and natural shades, never go above 35 °C
Washing after stitching	Never above 30 °C, with a soap for delicate items (or Marseille soap), without rubbing so the threads do not bleed; rinse with plenty of cold water
Drying and pressing	Remove excess water by rolling the linen in a clean towel and pressing, never wringing; dry flat, in the shade, away from heat sources. Iron while still slightly damp, at a medium-high setting (linen/cotton), always from the back, with a folded soft towel under the embroidery so the stitches are not crushed

Description

Edinburgh is a fine, firmly woven evenweave linen for counted thread work where small detail matters: cross stitch over two threads, half cross stitch, backstitch, hemstitching and drawn thread work on tablecloths, mats, towels, small gifts and framed pieces. The even weave makes the threads easy to count and clean to withdraw.

Worked over two threads it gives seven stitches per centimetre (about 18 stitches per inch): one strand of stranded cotton gives light, even coverage, two strands a fuller result, with a size 26 or 28 tapestry needle. Wash the linen before starting, as it shrinks on the first wash, and leave a generous margin around the design for the frame and the finishing.
