Loiret is a cotton fabric with the structure of Aida, woven in squares that are framed by bands of plain weave: a motif stitched inside each block comes with its own border and needs no extra finishing. It works well for modular projects — place mats, table runners, cushion fronts, bags, cot blankets — and for beginners or for stitching with children, since the blocks are large and easy to count.
Cross stitch over one block takes three strands of stranded cotton, two for backstitch, with a size 24 tapestry needle; perle cotton no. 8 also covers well. Plan the layout before cutting, so the woven lines fall where hems and seams are wanted.
