Lugana is an evenweave of cotton and modal: soft to the touch, with enough body to be worked in the hand or in a hoop, and with the slight sheen the modal gives it. The weave is easy to count, which makes it practical for table linen, samplers, cushions, small framed pieces, pouches and finishing details.
Cross stitch is usually worked over two threads with two strands of stranded cotton, one strand for backstitch and fine detail; perle cotton no. 8 also works well. Use a size 24 or 26 tapestry needle, which slips between the threads without splitting them. Half cross stitch, blackwork, Assisi work and simple drawn thread borders suit it too. Allow at least 5 cm of spare fabric on every side for mounting.
