Lugana is a cotton and modal evenweave with a soft handle and a smooth, slightly lustrous surface that shows embroidery threads off clearly. Cross stitch is usually worked over two fabric threads, and the weave also takes drawn thread work, pulled thread stitches, backstitch, blackwork and Hardanger: it suits table linen, samplers, cushions, needlebooks and small accessories.
Over two threads, two strands of stranded cotton cover well for cross stitch, while one strand is enough for half cross stitch, outlines and lettering; a fine perle cotton works nicely for drawn thread borders and hemstitching. A size 24 or 26 tapestry needle slips between the threads without distorting them. The weave is stable enough to stitch in hand, provided the edges are zigzagged or tacked first.
