Murano, also known as Murano Lugana, is a soft cotton and modal evenweave with a smooth, slightly lustrous surface. The even weave keeps counting straightforward, so it works both for stitchers moving on from Aida and for finer pieces: samplers, framed designs, table linen, cushions, biscornu and small sewn accessories.
Cross stitch is normally worked over two threads, using two strands of stranded cotton for full coverage and one strand for backstitch or half cross stitch; a size 24 tapestry needle slides between the threads without distorting them. The edges of the cut piece fray easily, so overcast or tape them before starting and mark the centre with a tacking thread.
