Murano Carré is a version of Murano (also known as Murano Lugana) with a check pattern woven into the ground: the weave stays even and easy to count, while the squares act as a guide for placing borders, small motifs and lettering. Zweigart also suggests using it unstitched, for backings, linings and finishing. It suits tablecloths, runners, place mats, cushions, little bags and samplers.
Cross stitch is usually worked over two threads, with one or two strands of stranded cotton depending on the coverage wanted, and a size 24 or 26 tapestry needle; one strand is enough for half cross stitch and backstitch. The soft handle of the cotton and modal blend also works well for drawn thread work and hardanger. There is no need to wash it before stitching.
