Rustico Aida has the clearly marked blocks typical of Aida, while the blend of cotton, viscose and linen gives it a slightly uneven surface and a natural, homespun look. It suits samplers, country and primitive designs, Christmas and folk motifs, and makes up well into cushions, drawstring pouches, bags, album covers and framed pieces.
Cross stitch is usually worked with two strands of stranded cotton over one block, with a single strand for backstitch and details; no. 8 perle cotton gives fuller coverage. A size 24 or 26 tapestry needle slips through the holes without enlarging them. Overcast or zigzag the edges before starting and allow at least 5 cm (2 in) of spare fabric around the design for mounting or framing.
