Smyrnastramin is the base fabric for knotted rugs: the stiff, very open weave forms large squares that are easy to count and strong enough to carry the weight of the knots without distorting. It is worked without a frame, resting on your lap, and suits rugs, bedside mats, cushions and bags; it is a good project for beginners.
The usual method is the Smyrna (latch hook) knot, using pre-cut rug wool and a latch hook. The canvas can also be stitched in half cross stitch or cross stitch with rug wool, adding strands if the yarn does not cover the ground. Before starting, bind the edges of the cut with masking tape and leave a few squares free all round for finishing.
