Stramin 500 is a double-thread (Penelope) canvas with a firm dressing that keeps it taut, so it can be worked without a frame. It is meant for designs that cover the ground completely – tent stitch, half cross stitch, gobelin and the other canvas stitches – for cushions, chair seats, bags, rugs and panels.
Choose the thread to suit the count: tapestry wool on the coarser meshes, pearl cotton or several strands of stranded cotton on the finer ones, enough to cover the canvas without straining the holes, and a blunt tapestry needle in a matching size. It also serves as waste canvas: baste it onto the ground fabric, stitch through both layers, then dampen the work and pull out the canvas threads one at a time.
