Sulta is a cotton fabric woven in pairs of threads, with the same thread count in warp and weft: the squares are easy to follow and threads withdraw cleanly, without fraying the weave. It is the fabric for Hardanger work — kloster blocks, drawn thread fillings and cutwork — and it also takes cross stitch over two threads, half cross stitch, blackwork and counted thread stitches in general.
Kloster blocks are usually worked in no. 5 pearl cotton, with no. 8 or no. 12 for the filling stitches; for cross stitch one or two strands of stranded cotton are enough, used with a size 24 tapestry needle. The weave stays square in a hoop or frame, so allow a few centimetres of spare fabric all round the design for mounting.
