Herta is a large-block Aida: the weave forms clearly defined squares with open holes, so stitches are easy to place and easy to count. It suits first cross stitch projects, stitching with children and teaching in classes and workshops, as well as quick decorations, cushion fronts, teaching samplers and seasonal trims where a bold, chunky stitch is wanted.
Because the blocks are large, heavier threads are needed: all six strands of stranded cotton, pearl cotton no. 3 or no. 5, or tapestry wool, with a size 20 or 22 tapestry needle. Full cross stitch and half cross stitch over one block both work well. Allow a few centimetres of spare fabric around the design for framing or making up.
