Cork is an evenweave pure linen with the slightly uneven slubs of the flax yarn and a fairly open count, so it also suits anyone working on linen for the first time. Cross stitch over two threads works well here, on samplers, towel and tablecloth borders, small framed pieces, cushions and bags; the threads are easy to count and to withdraw, which makes it a good ground for drawn thread and pulled thread work too.
Two or three strands of stranded cotton give good coverage in cross stitch, one strand is enough for backstitch, while perle cotton no. 8 and no. 12 suit Hardanger and pulled work. Use a size 24 tapestry needle, wash the fabric before starting and leave a generous margin around the design for finishing.
