Description

Feinsmyrna is a medium-weight Sudan-type canvas: the stiff, widely spaced mesh is easy to count and takes thick yarns without distorting. It suits large pieces — wall hangings and panels, cushions, bags — and knotted rugs worked in Smyrna knots, either with pre-cut rug wool lengths or with wool from the ball.

For cross stitch and half cross stitch use tapestry wool, doubled if needed to cover the ground well, with a large size 13 tapestry needle; for knotting, a latch hook does the job. A tapestry frame keeps the canvas square, and it is worth leaving a few centimetres of spare canvas all round so the edges can be turned and bound with tape.
