Edelrupfen is a heavy, coarse jute with an open weave and a rustic look. Zweigart lists it for creative textile work and decorative embroidery: the weave is not perfectly square, so it is not a dependable ground for accurate counted thread work, while it suits free stitching, large motifs, appliqué and making bags, pouches, cushions, table runners and country-style decorations.
Substantial threads work best: three strands of stranded cotton, no. 8 perle cotton or embroidery wool, with a large blunt tapestry needle (size 20 to 22). Cut edges fray readily, so finish them before starting and mount the fabric in a frame to keep an even tension; a light backing fabric helps if the piece is to be used rather than framed.
