Klostern is a coarse block-weave fabric with wide holes and clearly separated blocks: the squares can be counted at a glance, even in poor light, which makes it a sensible choice for beginners, for children and for anyone who would rather stitch without a magnifier. It is soft to handle but firm enough for cushions, Christmas stockings, small wall hangings and large-scale samplers.
Thick threads are needed to cover the blocks: tapestry wool, pearl cotton no. 3 or 5, or six strands of stranded cotton, worked with a size 20 or 22 tapestry needle. Stitching grows quickly, so it suits gifts and projects with a deadline. Allow at least 5 cm (2 in) of spare fabric on every side for framing and finishing.
