The pheasant design comes printed in colour on the calico, so there is no counting: you work over the printed areas with a range of stitches, from stem and satin stitch to French knots, adding metallic threads and small embellishments that catch the light on the grasses and seedheads. The chart tells you which thread and which stitch to use for every part of the design.
It suits anyone who has done a little embroidery and wants to try freestyle work, or a cross stitcher looking for something more painterly. You will also need a hoop to keep the fabric taut, and a frame once the stitching is done: neither is included. The finished square works well framed as a small picture.
