Monks Cloth is a loosely woven cotton made in a basket weave, with threads grouped in pairs: the fabric is soft, it gives under the needle and closes back around the thread, which is why Zweigart offers it as a dedicated ground for punch needle and tufting. The even grid also suits sashiko, kogin, Swedish huck weaving and cross stitch worked over one block, as well as throws and afghans finished with a fringe.
For punch needle use wool, pearl cotton or several strands of stranded cotton, matching the needle to the thickness of the yarn; three or four strands of stranded cotton are enough for cross stitch. Mount the fabric drum-tight in a frame and finish the cut edges straight away, as the open weave frays readily.
