Ideal for soft afghan and a favorite for Punchneedle, Sashiko, Kogin, Tufting and Swedish (Huck Weaving). This 7ct. fabric is 100% cotton loosely woven into a soft basket-weave fabric.

Before stitching	Cotton is stable (shrinkage of 1-1.5% at most), so pre-washing is not needed: simply press out the fold creases. Zigzag or tape the edges before you start, as the open weave frays easily
Washing after stitching	By hand, never above 30 °C, with a mild soap for delicates or Marseille soap, without rubbing so the threads do not bleed; rinse thoroughly in plenty of cold water
Drying and pressing	Roll the fabric in a clean towel and press to remove excess water, never wring; dry flat, away from direct sunlight. Press on the wrong side with a folded soft towel under the work so stitches and loops are not crushed

Description

Monk's Cloth is a soft, loosely woven basket-weave cotton: the threads shift just enough to let the punch needle through and then close back around the yarn, holding the loops on the reverse. It makes a sound ground for rugs, cushions, bags, wall hangings and soft throws, and it also suits sashiko, kogin, tufting and Swedish (huck) weaving, since the clear squares guide the counting.

Work it with rug wool, heavy cottons or all six strands of stranded cotton, depending on the needle tip. The fabric must be stretched drum-tight on a gripper or locking frame, or the stitches will not stay put. Raw edges fray quickly, so zigzag them before starting and allow a generous margin around the design for finishing.
