Historically renowned as the fabric of the highly refined handkerchiefs of aristocratic ladies and elegant lords, the batiste is a very fine, 100% cotton fabric (95ct) that has always been used for all freehand embroidery techniques. Delicate and precious, it is ideal for all kinds of whitework, Richelieu embroidery, iron-on model embroidery, as well as for the French "boutis" and all the traditional stitches that require a compact support, made of very fine threads.

Description

Batist is a cotton batiste woven from very fine yarns, light and closely set: the cloth is sheer enough to let the thread carried on the back show through, which is exactly what shadow work relies on. It suits whitework, cutwork and Richelieu, satin stitch and traditional surface stitches, and takes iron-on transfer patterns well.

Work it with fine threads – one or two strands of stranded cotton, or a fine coton à broder – using a small sharp-pointed embroidery needle. A hoop keeps the fabric taut and stops the stitches from pulling. Good for handkerchiefs, baby clothes, cuffs, table centres and borders; allow enough margin for hems and finishing.
