Kingston is a closely woven evenweave linen spun from a fine, regular yarn: threads are easy to count and withdraw cleanly. It suits embroiderers with some experience of counted thread work who want small, finely finished pieces – table linen, centrepieces, bags, framed miniatures, lingerie bags and small accessories – and it also takes free embroidery, whitework and hemstitched borders.
Cross stitch worked over two threads gives about 11 stitches per centimetre, so one strand of stranded cotton or a fine silk is enough for good coverage, with a size 26 or 28 tapestry needle. Wash the linen before starting and leave a generous margin around the design for hems and finishing.
