Murano, also sold as Murano Lugana, is a cotton and modal evenweave with a soft sheen: pleasant to handle, firm enough to keep its shape in a hoop or frame, and with threads that are easy to count. It works well for samplers, framed pieces, cushions, pouches and borders for table linen, and for any counted thread project that calls for a fine fabric without the stiffness of canvas.
Cross stitch is usually worked over two threads with two strands of stranded cotton; one strand is enough for backstitch and fine detail. Use a size 26 tapestry needle. Zigzag or overcast the raw edges before starting and allow a few centimetres around the design for framing and finishing.
