Picnic Denim belongs to Something Blue, the Tilda collection born from Tone Finnanger's love of blue and white pottery. The print is a dense bouquet of pale blue roses on a dark blue ground, with tiny dots filling the spaces in between: from a distance it reads almost as a deep solid, close up all the flowers appear. This is the fabric to use as a base or background when the lighter prints need calming down.
It works well in quilt blocks, borders and cushion backs, and also for bags, aprons and skirts, since dark blue does not show marks easily. Pre-wash the fabric before cutting, so that the slight shrinkage happens before you sew; for long strips, choose one of the larger cuts.
