A cross stitch rendering of Vermeer's famous painting, with the milkmaid pouring milk in the light coming through the window. The linen background is subtly printed, so the large pale areas of wall and air stay soft without being stitched square by square: you work the figure and the still life, building depth through the colour shading.
This is a demanding project, best suited to stitchers with counted-thread experience: fine linen is usually worked with one strand of stranded cotton over two threads, with a frame and good light. The frame shown in the photo is not included: once finished, the piece deserves to be laced over board and framed like a painting.
